We could go on for hours about the benefits of starting an online business. But the purpose of this article is to help YOU determine why YOU want to start an internet business.

Listed above are just a few of the perks that draw many people in. However, it needs to be said that it takes a lot of hard work to get this started. It takes time, patience, perseverance, dedication and most important, MOTIVATION.

Jim Ryun said “Motivation is what get’s you started. Habit is what keeps you going.”

It all begins with your personal motivations. Then you build from there.

What is YOUR motivation?

Without clearly defined motivations you are setting yourself up for failure. Why? Because just like any other business you are going to see highs and lows, successes and failures. (Although with proper training you will see far more success than failure)

It’s tough getting started and easy to question whether or not this is for you. Most successful entrepreneurs will admit that they had at least a couple of failures and setbacks before seeing their ultimate success. What makes them different is the fact that they used those failures as learning experiences, picked themselves back up, and kept moving forward towards their dreams. They never gave up.

Personal motivation and relentless drive are what kept them going.

Here are a few of the many things that keep people motivated and help them focus on ultimate success:

Whether it’s the ability to call your own shots, control your own destiny, work from your couch in your PJ’s, or the financial benefits that can come from running your own business, freedom is the biggest motivator for most people. It is the gateway to every other factor. Freedom wins every time when counting the cost and looking towards success.

Once you’ve tasted the freedom that comes with working for yourself and on your own terms the simple thought of going back to a j.o.b. is enough to make you sick to your stomach. Plus, as your business grows you will begin to experience more and more financial freedom as well, which is one of the greatest feelings in the world!

You’ll begin to understand how money works, think about it new ways, and how to make it work FOR you rather than you working for it. You will finally be able to stop living paycheck to paycheck or living FOR a paycheck.

Coming from personal experience, I can tell you that it changed my entire world when I found out that my wife was pregnant and we were going to have a little child to care for. It changed the way that I thought about everything.

Why Start An Internet Business My Motivation
My Motivation

The company I was working for at the time didn’t offer much in the way of flexibility. I would leave for work early in the morning, drop our son off at the expensive babysitter, and off to work. I wouldn’t see him until 11 or 12 hours later and it was usually just enough to see him right before he went to bed. Many of you know exactly what I’m talking about.

I never got to see him. That’s what got me started looking at the option of working from home and creating my own work life.

How much more could you do with your family if you weren’t strapped to working 50-60 hours a week?

Passion (Do what YOU love)

The beauty of working for yourself is that you can do whatever you want! Whether your passion is online marketing, traveling, real estate, or sitting around playing video games there are ways for you to turn it into a full-time income. It’s happening every day to people who are defining their motivations, learning the processes, and making it happen. Why Start An Internet Business Passion

Are you sick of sitting in that cubicle for 55 hours a week doing something you absolutely hate? I was! And before that, I was strapped to an assembly line for 14 years! I finally started seeking out better alternatives. There had to be a better way, to do something I was passionate about, and there is.

When you start to explore the world of entrepreneurship, whether online or just starting your own general business, you start focusing inward on yourself and identifying what you have to offer the world. That’s how you find your niche.

When you find that niche it unlocks creativity in you that you never even realized that you had. You just have to channel it and make it work for you!

What are your financial goals?

When I started my training courses one of the first things I was asked to identify was my financial goals. (Get a free preview of that lesson by clicking here) This is especially important to your success because it helps you set goals, both short-term, and long-term.

Ask yourself the following questions:

How much money do you NEED to make?

Whether you are looking to pay off debt or supplement/replace your income this is usually the initial motivator. Look at your monthly budget and determine your needs first.

Start with the basics. This isn’t about the luxuries at this point, it’s about the necessities. Be willing to cut back on some things for a period of time and get that monthly budget balanced!

How much money would you be happy making?

When looking at this question, ask yourself what those short-term goals are? How much would it take to pay off that debt, to save for that dream vacation, to be able to cut back on those overtime hours, etc.? Think of the short-term, and get ready to work hard towards that goal!

How much money would you be ecstatic making?

Now you turn your focus to the long-term. This is the job replacement income. How much money would it take for you to walk away from your full-time job once and for all? Be honest, be realistic, and start working to make it happen!

Important: Write your answers down and keep them in a place where you can regularly see them. I keep mine in my home office. It’s a constant reminder that keeps my drive going.

How much time are you willing to commit to your own success?

Success isn’t going to happen overnight. I cannot stress this enough. It takes time, hard work and dedication. But it’s worth every bit of it. Start off slow. If you join the online education program that I used to train me it’ll take you roughly 45 min to an hour per lesson. Depending on how fast you learn and what all you need to apply to your business, of course.

If you have an hour a day to give you can achieve some great results in just a few short weeks! The rest of it is just coming up with content and ideas, writing them out, and communicating to the world.

Final thoughts

As I said before, motivation is critical. You can’t just wake up one day and say “I think I’ll start an online business” and expect it to be very successful. You need to focus on the “why”. For me, personally, it was all of the reasons I mentioned above.

  • I wanted the freedom to control my work, enjoy my work and be in charge of my own success (or failure).
  • I wanted financial freedom to finally get that debt paid off once and for all.
  • And I wanted more time with my wife and son.

Your motivations may be different, and that’s great. They are YOUR motivations! Identify them, write them down, and USE them as the driving force of your success!

So what is your motivation? I’d love to read about it in the comment section below.

I have thought all the above. You just don’t know when you might be ‘released’ from employment.

Living out someone else’s dream is not the way to go or live, which is what the 9 am to 5 pm (or 7 am to 9 pm) job is about.

    • Great point, Mike. Unfortunately, it’s happening to people all the time. Now that companies are looking to AI to try and automate more and more of their processes, we need to be looking to protect ourselves. I’ve heard many financial experts and successful entrepreneurs say that the only future proof “profession”, is to become an entrepreneur. The more I follow these mentors and the more I learn about business and the economy, the more I wholeheartedly agree with them.

Great blog and the part that hits home.

“Once you’ve tasted the freedom that comes with working for yourself and on your own terms the simple thought of going back to a j.o.b. is enough to make you sick to your stomach”.

So true and something worth working towards. Your site is great and I’ll be spending some time here.

    • Thank you for the feedback, Dave! Indeed. I was helping out a real estate friend of mine this past summer with a couple of websites. He was struggling and was telling me that his family keeps nudging him to go back to a regular job and a regular paycheck. He was telling me, “Man, I cringe at the simple thought of that. I never want to go back to a factory or construction. I want to learn from my setbacks and move forward. I just want to keep my freedom.”
